2007 Non-District

KCHS Alumni 3, Klein Collins Varsity 1

Tuesday, January 2, 2007

After being trounced in the first annual Alumni Game in 2006, the KCHS Alumni were determined to redeem themselves against the 2007 varsity squad in the second annual Alumni Game played on January 2, 2007. The old Tigers did just that as they came away with a 3-1 victory over the current Tigers.

The first half ended in a scoreless tie as both squads squandered opportunities in front of the net. 2004 grad Nick Taghizadeh broke the deadlock with a blast past goalkeeper Mike Brown early in the second half. The current Tigers came back as Cash Davis notched the equalizer against 2006 grad Justin Fite. The alums regained the lead for good as 2005 grad Nick Crowder knock home a cross against Wes Vallentine before 2006 alum J.J. Manley scored off of an assist by Fite.

Collins drops heartbreaker to Westlake 3-2

In a hard-fought contest, the Chaparrals came back to pull out a 3-2 victory by converting a penalty kick with 37 seconds left in the opening game for both squads.

After a back and forth first half, the Tigers struck first with their own penalty kick. Sophomore Trevor Johnson set up a two-on-one situation for sophomore Kenny Cosgrove whose intial shot was denied by Westlake keeper Michael Lisch. But as Cosgrove was going after the rebound, he was tripped by Lisch and the PK was awarded. Sophomore Victor Castellanos stepped up for Collins and blasted the ball into the upper right of the goal with 3:29 left in the first half.

Westlake would equalize with just over two minutes left in the half, as Andrew Bowman blasted a shot in from about 35 yards out that Tiger keeper Mike Brown got a hand on, but not enough to deflect it wide.

Collins would regain the lead as sophomore Malcolm Johnson converted a breakaway opportunity with just 22 seconds left in the half.

The Tigers would have several opportunities in the second half to increase their lead, but their shots either were not on target or were saved by Lisch. With just under 20 minutes left in the contest, the Chaps' Grant Rodell scored from the top of the box to even the score at 2-2. Andres Cuero then converted the penalty kick with 37 seconds left to give Westlake the victory.

In a Tiger tussle, the Conroe Tigers edged out the Klein Collins Tigers 1-0 in the second game of the Klein Showcase for both squads. In a heated contest between the two former district rivals, Collins had several opportunities that were either turned away by Conroe keeper Roger Celaya or missed the mark. Conroe was able to slot home the lone score of the game in the second half with Eduardo Nava getting the tally. After the score, Collins turned up the pressure and had several scoring chances but could not find the back of the net.

Tigers pick up first victory

After two difficult defeats, Klein Collins finally broke into the win column with a 3-1 victory over San Antonio's No. 2 ranked team, Lee. The Tigers opened the scoring with a goal by junior Rudy Howard. After the Vols were able to equalize on a chip past sophomore keeper Wes Vallentine, sophomore Gilberto Chavez put Collins up for good with a beautiful shot to the upper 90 from about 35-yards out. Sophomore Malcolm Johnson then notched his second goal of the season in the second half to cap off the scoring.

Richardson Pearce 3, Klein Collins 1

Thursday, January 18

On a frigid, wet night in Brenham, Richardson Pearce mounted a strong second half comeback to knock off the Tigers 3-1 in the opening game of the Diadora Cup for both teams.

Playing on a narrow, muddy field, Collins struck first as sophomore Trevor Johnson got a solid header off of a sophomore Kenny Cosgrove long throw, but the Mustang keeper made the initial save. Tiger junior Rudy Howard pounced on the rebound and knocked it home. The Tigers created several other scoring opportunities as the muddy conditions slowed down the Mustang defense, but Collins came up short on each attempt as it held a 1-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, the senior-laden Mustang squad used the muddy conditions and a strong desire to its advantage as the Class 4A preseason No. 6 ranked team in the state controlled play and converted its scoring chances to earn the victory. Greg Holstein got the equalizer for Pearce as the Mustangs went over the top of the Tiger defense to create a 1-on-1 breakaway. Using the same strategy, Cory Anderson converted another breakaway opportunity before the senior capped off the scoring with a nice header off of a cross from the right side. Junior Keegan Smith controlled the midfield for Pearce while senior Peter Smelko led the Mustang defense that played a much strong half and was able to shut down the Tiger attack.

Collins completed its day with a strong performance against the Rams, who had defeated the Tigers 1-0 the previous week in a scrimmage. Ridge created some early scoring opportunities but the Tiger defense and keeper Emilio Santellan thwarted them. The Collins offense then took over the game, but again struggled to capitalize on their scoring chances. The Tigers finally got on the board in the second half as Lewis Robertson was pulled down in the box as he attempted to shot in a corner kick clearance. Drew Barber then knocked home the penalty kick. Collins would score again as the Rams were called for a high-kick in the box. Connor Bartholomew took the indirect kick and William Luna converted it for a goal.

The Tigers finished group play with 21 points to tie Memorial. However, the Mustangs advanced to the third-place game based on goals scored as they had one more than Collins. The Tigers finished the tournament without having allowed an goal in 180 minutes of play.
